Bryce had told Brenner that he’d been studying at the law library on Saturday well into Sunday morning, only leaving when the library closed. Brenner had confirmed that Bryce had signed in and out, but the law library was a big place. She opened her laptop and searched for pictures of it. It was an older building, and Nikki guessed most of the windows didn’t open wide enough for anyone to squeeze through, much less anyone Bryce’s size.

Nikki’s phone vibrated with a text from Liam. He’d received Weber Legal’s security footage and had been able to confirm Vic’s alibi. At least they could scratch that off the list.

Nikki tried calling Ella, but the call went straight to voicemail. Hopefully she was just licking Gavin’s wounds instead of dealing with her own. And how did Gavin fit into all of this? So far, he was the only person Bryce appeared to actually be close to, so if Bryce had gone to anyone for help about what to do about Jessica, it would have been him, but that would mean Bryce had some kind of advance warning. Had Jessica made the mistake of going to Bryce before the police? Doing that made sense only if she wanted more money—or trouble.

She glanced at her phone to see if any new information had come through, but Courtney was still processing the hundreds of prints that she’d taken from the Weber home and going over Bryce’s car at the lab; Liam had a list of leads to follow up on, and the current information from the hospital was that Bryce was critical but stable, still in the induced coma.

Nikki rubbed the back of her neck. She should try to get a few hours of sleep, but her mind never really shut off when she worked a case like this one. The images of the three victims from this morning ran on a carousel in her head, but she kept coming back to Jessica’s broken body.

She could imagine her as a shy freshman, desperate to come out of her shell but unsure how. Taking risks and trying to fit in, desperate to be noticed. All she wanted to do was fit in somewhere, and it had gotten her killed.
